To understand the band Awaking Mercury, you have to know the heart and soul of its founding member Luk Eccles, and all the amazingly hard work, sacrifice and dedication he’s put in to making Awaking Mercury a band to take notice of. Watching the evolution of the band from its earliest moments, the one thing that has always stood out to me was the passion and love Luk had for music. Luk never passed up an opportunity to play or to share his musical talents with others. For Luk, his vision was always to take his music to the next level. From changes in band members, to experimenting with new sounds and ideas musically, to covering topics lyrically most would shy away with, we find that Luk was determined to make Awaking Mercury a success no matter what it took.
With the release of their first independent album “Head To The Indies,” we began to see the beginning signs of maturity in not only Luk’s musical abilities, but in his songwriting as well for Awaking Mercury. With a more poetic approach lyrically, he’s come a long way from the days of Dreaming Under Mercury and the poppier sound that he once used to display more frequently. Though, musically, the sounds of “If It’s Maria” are similar to “Head To the Indies,” we see that once again, the music is a little more mature and defined. Luk has always found a way to take good ole fashioned rock and roll, and make it unique and original to fit his personality and own personal style.
Though the sound and style might not appeal to all audiences, the sophistication and elegance of the music will definitely wet the pallets of the classic and dedicated rock and roll fans, and bring a breath of fresh air to the over saturated and very similar rock and roll world. The highlight songs are “No Trespassing” and the Title track “If It’s Maria,” which showcase the clever rock progressions and catchy hooks Luk is known for.
For me, this is another step in the right direction for Luke and Awaking Mercury. I’ve always been on record saying that I’ve always been a HUGE fan, and if anyone deserves the opportunity to make it big, it’s Luk. Overall, this EP is a wonderful preview of things bigger and better in the future for Luk and Awaking Mercury. If you’re a fan of Further Seems Forever, The Choir, The Altered, or Curious Fools you’ll love Awaking Mercury.
